Last year at this time we had just gotten settled and were getting used to living here in Quesnel. There was fresh snow on the ground and we weren’t sure what to expect from the upcoming winter. Today there is again fresh snow, we have been living here a little over a year and have experienced all the seasons, including winter, summer, mosquito, and bear season. We really love living here. Both Carolanne and I feel that this has been a really good move for our family. It’s a quieter pace of life, more light and sunshine, and a friendly community. Carolanne loves being able to have a garden, and she was able to grow a number of veggies that we enjoyed over the summer and fall. Ben enjoys biking and spent many hours riding around the quieter streets of our neighbourhood and in town. Julia has grown to like attending the weekly youth events at our church and hanging out with a new friend. And I have appreciated having more room in the garage to work on odd jobs. The kids are continuing on with homeschool. Last year for grade 10 we switched Ben into a new program with a school called Heritage and this year we did the same for grade 9 with Julia. It has been a bit of a challenge since this school (and grade 10 in general) is more structured than their previous experiences. However, they are both catching on and we feel that this has been a good direction to go with their education. We have both been very grateful to attend a life-group for new people to in our church. We have been meeting weekly for over a year now, with a break during the summer. It’s been a really great opportunity to connect with other local couples and study the Bible together. ### MINISTRY STATUS This year I spent quite a bit of time developing a new “Live Chat” tool that our mentors can use to connect with people looking for help. When mentors activate the tool, it starts inviting website visitors to come and chat in real-time with someone who can help encourage and pray for them right then and there. At the time I write this we are working to train our English speaking mentors how to engage in this form of ministry. We are also translating and releasing the software and training in several other languages and countries. Another interesting project we’ve been exploring is how we might engage with the online video gaming demographic. There are large and vibrant communities of online gamers who might never set foot into a church, but meet regularly to play and stream video games together. Some of these include popular Christian influencers who aren’t sure how to transition to a discussion of Jesus. One of my team members is exploring how we might help build a safe space for gamers to come and talk about faith! These are just a couple of the many different projects, strategies and partnerships that the Digital Strategies ministry has been pursuing. Our ministry equips mentors to respond to more than 75,000 people each year who reach out to us via our websites. We also partner with 80+ churches and ministries in 128 countries who use our tools to increase their reach and impact. ***Thank you for helping us continue to serve with P2C :: Digital Strategies!*** Carolanne and I are incredibly thankful to have people like you standing with us in prayer and financial support as we continue in this ministry. We depend on the generosity of others like you to continue serving in these areas. If you can help with a special gift this year, it would be a huge blessing both to us and to the ministry. Dear Friends,

Another year is drawing to a close and I'd like to take these few words to share some more personal thoughts and prayer requests. Our family has been slowly adjusting to our new life since moving up to Quesnel at the end of August. We love it here so far, especially the slower pace and quieter neighborhood. Winter hit early though and we have been scrambling to find good cold-weather gear for each of us. Carolanne does an amazing job finding good deals on gently used supplies.

Pray that God would help us make good connections in our neighborhood and church. Pray also for the kids as they are having some difficulty stepping out and making friends. And continue to pray for our fundraising efforts.

We've Moved! https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2022/09/08/weve-moved Thu, 08 Sep 22 15:50:16 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=3035

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has been praying for us in our move! We have a new home!

We are SO thankful for this new place. We have been here a week as of Wednesday and so far we love it! Though the journey has been rocky and super stressful at times we're thrilled to be finally through and officially moved in.

Thank you for praying for us! We know there have been many who have prayed diligently as we have walked through this process.

A little about the journey so far...

The picture above is the new place that we bought in the small town of Quesnel, about 6.5 hours drive north of where we used to live in Chilliwack. Since my (James) work is entirely online, I can work from anywhere as long as there is good internet connectivity. We started this process back in March, packing boxes into a storage unit and then listing our house for sale in April. We both felt like this was the direction that God was leading us.

One cool example of this was on the day that we were having pictures taken of our place. I had been praying the days before that it would be sunny for the pictures. I really wanted the place to be presented well and so sunshine coming in the windows would be just perfect. But we woke up on the morning of pictures and it was very grey and POURING rain. Still, I hoped for a miracle, though looking outside wasn't very uplifting to my faith. Even 20 minutes before the photographer was scheduled to arrive it was still grey and raining.

Then, the Lord answered my prayer. When the photographer showed up and started taking pictures the rain stopped, the sky opened up, and sunshine shone through. There are very few times I have seen such obvious and unmistakable answers to my prayers, but this was one of them. I know it might seem trivial in the grand scheme of things, but it was very meaningful to me and it gave me a little glimpse of what might be to come.

So, we listed our place for sale and the real-estate market in Chilliwack promptly crashed.

The crash...

Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration, but not much of one. We've talked to real-estate people who say the market turned almost overnight. We lived in a very nice townhouse complex and we saw another place in the same complex sell very quickly shortly before us. In fact, there was a bidding war and it went for $50k over the asking price within a week. However that place was a real "fixer-upper" so to speak. Realtors might say it had "good bones" and just needed "a little elbow grease". We know it needed a LOT of work.

So, we listed slightly higher, thinking we would have no trouble selling our nice, move-in-ready place. We wanted to sell because we really wanted to get into a larger place, in a quieter area with more room for the kids to roam and play. Not to mention we anticipated that Ben would want to park a car on the driveway soon enough.

But then, after listing with high hopes, nothing happened. No offers. Very few showings. We started to wonder if we picked the wrong agent, but he seemed to be doing what he could. We even ran into a few other agents who said he had mentioned our place to them.

After a month and a half the realtor encouraged us to consider lowering our price. We grudgingly hacked a year's wages off the price tag and waited for the lower offers to flow in. We hoped that we had taken enough off to capture people's interest and maybe still get bids over what we were asking. Yet, still nothing.

After what seemed like years, we finally received a very low offer for our place in July. This was another $35k lower than what we had already lowered our price to. At first we did not want to consider it. It was too low. It was far less even than the dumpy unit that sold in the bidding war down the lane. It was almost an insult!

However, time was moving on, and since we were planning to go further north we really wanted to be moved into a new place before the snow hit. After more thought and prayer we decided to accept their offer. Not having any insight yet into where we might move, we agreed to a possession date for the end of August. That gave us 1.5 months to find a place, make an offer, verify all the particulars and do the move.

The search...

Throughout all of this we had already been looking for new places up in Quesnel. We chose this town because of a combination of factors. We love the climate and terrain. We really wanted to live in a smaller, quieter, more peaceful area. We were constantly running into folks who spoke highly of the town. We could almost afford a proper house here. And two of Carolanne's brothers already lived here. When my sister and brother-in-law decided to move up to Prince George, (1.5 hours north of Quesnel) that clinched the decision.

Having accepted the offer on our place, we searched for homes with even greater vigor. I had multiple realtors sending listings to me, along with several automated systems watching for any new place or development. I scoured hundreds of listings looking for just the right place. We even put offers in on a few of them, though we were usually out-bid by others.

I think the Lord continues to have a sense of humour because in the end, in spite of the automated internet robots alerting me to anything new, and the multiple realtors watching for possible places, and my own constant searching, it ended up being Carolanne who found this place while casually browsing on Facebook marketplace. I'm so glad she did!

We moved in on Aug. 31'st. Now we have begun the long and tedious process of unpacking boxes and figuring out where everything is going to go. There are a few little things around the house that need fixing or repairing (hot water tank, fridge and some painting to name a few) but in general the place has been well kept and we're very happy with where we have landed.

Thanks!!!

Thank you again for praying for us! We really have appreciated all the support that folks have expressed to us and how many people have prayed for us during this move. It's a big deal to move a family that far. The kids had never moved before, and Carolanne has never lived outside the Fraser Valley. Thankfully since we homeschool there is less school exchange stress. We are going to continue with the homeschooling. We're still not sure exactly how prepared we are for the imminent snow. But we know that God continues to be with us and we trust He is guiding our steps.

As mentioned above, I James am continuing to work as a missionary with Power to Change. That part of our lives has not changed. I still serve with the internet based ministry called Digital Strategies (under P2C) and spend most of my day writing computer code used by our ministry and others to present the gospel and mentor people around the world.

We also still have many friends and family members who donate regularly to support us financially in this ministry. We are super thankful for each one who gives so faithfully and generously to help advance this kingdom work. Thank you for your continued gifts and prayer.

Our ministry really depends on these gifts and donations from people who understand the opportunity and impact, and who give generously to support it. If you would like to give to help support this online ministry, click here to go to our secure ministry giving form.

Thanks again on behalf of all of us,

James

Prayer Update https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2022/08/05/prayer-update Fri, 05 Aug 22 09:09:29 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=3030

Dear Friends,

We are excited and encouraged to tell you that it looks like we have found a place to live! Thank you for praying!

We have made an offer on a house for sale in Quesnel and it has been accepted. We still need to do our due diligence to verify things like financing and getting an inspection done, but over all it looks very promising! We are very thankful that God is answering our (and your) prayers about this!

It is an older home and will need a few updates here and there, but over-all seems to be in decent condition and shouldn't require huge up-front expenses to make it move-in ready. We will find out if there are major issues we haven't noticed once the inspection has been completed.

Thank you so much for praying for us in this. It's been quite a journey over the past several months, first trying to sell our place, then needing to find a place to buy and sorting out movers and such. We're really glad to be able to finally see the big pieces falling into place.

Please continue to pray that everything goes smoothly from here on out. We know there are still a myriad of details to get sorted out.

We will try to keep you informed as things progress.

Special Prayer Request https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2022/07/29/special-prayer-request Fri, 29 Jul 22 11:42:25 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=3020

Dear Friends,

We have a special and urgent prayer request for you today.

Please pray with us that we can find a new place to live by Aug. 30.

Here's a bit of background to this. Earlier this year (maybe February or March) we decided that it would be a healthy decision for our family to sell our townhouse and move to a larger place. We have lived in our Chilliwack townhouse for 15 years now and with the kids growing up it is beginning to feel pretty small.

However, mainly due to housing prices and mortgage costs, we decided we could not afford to buy anything larger around here in the Fraser Valley. Any actual houses around here typically sell for double the value of our townhouse. Usually over $1 million, which is far beyond what we can possibly afford to buy or mortgage.

As such, we chose to look for places in Quesnel which is a small town around 7 hours drive north of here. Prices there seemed much more reasonable, we had two family relatives already living there, and a third family of relatives moving to Prince George. (about 1 hour further north)

So, mid-April we put our house on the market for sale, expecting that it would sell fairly quickly at a good price. Two other places in our complex sold very quickly, with multiple competing offers. Then we waited... and prayed... and waited... and prayed... and waited.

Finally 3 months later we decided to accept the only offer we had received, which was very low compared to what we listed at originally. Our realtor informed us that if we didn't accept this offer, the next would likely be lower. So, we sold our place with a completion date of Aug. 29'th.

Now we're in the complicated position of needing to find somewhere else to buy, and quickly. We can't really afford anything larger here in the Fraser Valley; most likely not even the same size as what we have had.

We would really love to find a place on acreage. There are a few of these in Quesnel but they still have pretty high pricetags and many are older or quite run-down.

At this point we're starting to feel pretty desperate. We thought this was the direction that God was leading us. There have been several things that have taken place in the process to point us in that direction, however the overall progress has felt painfully slow and really stressful on all of us.

Please pray that God would provide just the right place for us and really quickly.

Thank you!

James, Carolanne, Ben and Julia

The kids and I have had bikes for a while, but we haven't had one for Carolanne until very recently. As a result, we've never gone biking all together as a family. It was fun to be able to get out and bike all together! Carolanne found a very good deal on a used lady's bike being sold by one of her friends. Also got an upgrade for Julia. It was kinda a cool provision from God. Carolanne was able to sell Julia’s smaller purple bike for exactly the same price as hers and Julia’s new ones together. Merry Christmas! We hope you have had a great year. I (James) am writing this letter to share with you a little about how we are doing and what sorts of activities we have been involved with as a family and in the ministry. It is super-cool to watch our kids growing up in both stature and maturity. Ben is 11 now and follows in his father’s footsteps from that age of loving to play with Lego. He also loves to run around outside with friends from our complex, as well as visit our neighbour (and 3’rd grandma) Mrs. Friesen. Julia is our little book-worm. She is 9 now and loves to read. I’m sure her library card gets more of a work-out than the rest of ours put together. She also loves to create crafts, projects and gifts from glue, paper, popsicle sticks, rocks and assorted other craft supplies that Carolanne keeps stocked in the house. As part of their homeschooling, both kids go ice-skating every week with a group of other homeschoolers and have been loving it. Julia also has been going to piano lessons and is getting better every year. We also had some sad events this year. Our dog Cookie passed away due to an illness. She got something quite suddenly and within a very short while was gone. Then we ended up rescuing a ferret that needed to be re-homed. Though it seemed to recover well initially (it had had a hard life) it too suddenly took a turn for the worse and died shortly after. Julia ended up taking both of these events quite hard and still does not like to talk about either of them. She loved both animals dearly. Now we have only a hamster and the gecko that I got Carolanne near the beginning of our marriage. Speaking of marriage, Carolanne and I are celebrating our 15’th anniversary this year. It’s hard to believe we have already had that much time together. I am convinced that the Lord knew what He was doing when He brought us together. It feels like just a little while ago we were flirting and I was wondering whether she felt the same way I did. Speaking of anniversaries, this coming year I will reach 20 years working for Power to Change. (previously called Campus Crusade for Christ) That time too has seemed to pass so very quickly. Over the years my job title has changed from time-to-time, and my team has changed, grown, shrunk, and changed again. My heart however has always been to make an eternal difference in people’s lives. I remain at Power to Change working with The Life Project because I am convinced that we are doing that very effectively every day. In my current role, I have the privilege of using my skills with computers and Internet to help our team reach thousands of people around the world with the life saving message of the gospel. In writing this letter, I went on a hunt for recent encouraging stories to share from the ministry. Traditional “over-seas” missionaries (for whom I have great respect) have the benefit of being able to share pictures of churches built, children fed, and new pastors taught in local on-the-ground churches. As an Internet missionary, I have no such pictures. Instead, I have stories, shared by our team members, volunteers and mentors, that I must somehow adapt to protect the privacy of those involved, and yet to engage the reader in understanding how amazing and effective this ministry really is. As I hunted for these stories, I was struck again by the vast number of hurting people we hear from every day. Folks dealing with relationship troubles; guys and gals battling porn; women struggling with abuse; people looking (sometimes successfully) to just end it all. There is tragedy, heart-ache, suffering, addiction, loneliness. And yet, sprinkled in those stories are glimpses of hope, courage, faithfulness, and trust in God’s goodness. There are stories of pastors connecting with our mentors, having almost nothing, but continuing to shepherd their small flock of believers. There are atheists finding life empty and coming to us asking about truth. There are people young and old coming back to Christ through the mentoring after wandering far from him. And there are suicidal people who come to Christ through their mentor’s encouragement instead of following through on the alternative.
Amanda* is a young believer (not in age, but in the Lord). She has moved from atheism to a belief in Jesus and has made that all important step to be baptized. She has now been going to a small Baptist church in her area and is part of a cell Bible study. It is wonderful to see Amanda grow in the Lord. How do I know that she is filled with the Spirit? Because of a life that is changed! Once she was filled with anxiety, depression, obsessiveness and longed for peace - fearful of death. Now she is calmer, happier and she says even her husband is happier these days. She has been sharing her new found faith with a friend who has only months to live. - A mentor with TMM.IO * Names have been changed to protect those involved.
These are the stories that encourage me in this work. Though I don’t preach in new churches in Asia or Africa, I get to learn of new pastors in the same lands connecting with mentors that we train and empower for encouragement and support. Though I don’t have pictures of children being fed in missions overseas, I have stories of young men and women conquering their additions to porn and being held before the Lord in prayer by their mentors. This year, we have partnered with pastors and missions on the ground in India, Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines. We are beginning to see many messages come in from people in those countries and in fact have a desperate need for more mentors to join our ministry. This past fiscal year, over 67,000 messages came in to our mentoring system from people around the world asking for mentoring help. In some cases we had to limit the amount of promotion we were doing simply due to not having enough mentors to answer everything. Please continue to pray for this ministry as we grow and develop. Pray that God will use us in mighty ways to reach people around the world with the Gospel. Pray also for funding. We have not yet raised all our personal support. The Life Project as a ministry also needs funds, as running an Internet based organization like this can be quite costly. Finally, please pray for our mentors. They are truly the front-line of this ministry and we need many more to volunteer. Thank you so much for your prayer and support of us. We wish you the best this Christmas season. He left for a little over a month and said that he wanted to work it out... He was taught that it is Christ who accepted us not the other way around. Please explain about this subject. After one of the leaders shared God’s love and she received Jesus as her Lord and Savior, this woman changed her name to “Running to Jesus”. What a beautiful example of the transformation that takes place in a person’s life as they come to a personal relationship with God. While people are coming to know God and are growing in their faith, the trained volunteers are also growing. Here is a response from one of our new mentors this past week: “Wow... this is an incredible thing. I knew I was signing up for something good but I had no idea it would be like this. This is incredible! I am struck by the severity of the need and the opportunity for redemption.” Last month there were 2,000 more conversations than the month before. Our mentors are full to capacity and we are in desperate need for more mentors. Have you ever thought about mentoring? She's around 4 months old now and her name is Cookie. She is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a King Charles Cavalier. She will be a medium size dog when full grown. She kind of looks like a mini Rusty. (That was our Golden Retriever dog we used to have that we had to get rid of when I was pregnant with Julia, but he went to a really nice couple that love him dearly) The kids love her although to begin with she knocked Julia over quite a bit which Julia was not pleased with.  Cookie also really liked Julia's ears...yum ear wax. Cookie would much prefer to run after the kids and pick up any food that they drop instead of eating her own food and she is always trying to get behind Julia's high chair and find something tasty. If all that fails she goes and eats her own food. The joys of owning a puppy and having small children all at the same time. For the most part they all get along great. We hesitate to say she is completely house broken, because just as we say it she tends to have an accident. She is doing really well though and for the most part is house broken. It seems like our kids and our puppy all really like the outdoors and will try to get out whenever they can. I have taken Cookie with us when we have went on a walk and when she gets tired she paws at the back of the stroller and hops a ride. This only works in the double stroller, because the back basket we can pop down for her to jump in. Although she has no problems with jumping.  The other day she jumped up into the back of our truck all on her own and today James caught her jumping onto the kitchen chair...she can climb on there before Julia. We are working on the not jumping on people and only petting her when she is not jumping up. This is not the easiest to teach a puppy when Ben does not mind at all if Cookie jumps up on him and sometimes is trying to get her to jump up. I would have to say it is definitely easier to train a puppy without kids. Really hard to all be consistent. She is slowly learning though and some days are so much easier then others. There are days that James and I have thought "Why did we get a puppy?", but for the most part we like her and think she is really smart and we also think she is really cute. We also know she will grow up and the bond that Ben and Julia are developing with her is so cute to watch. Ben tries to teach her to do things like "sit" and Julia tries to copy to and tell Cookie to sit...although Cookie listens more to Ben then Julia. It is really cute to watch though. When we are at my parents house she will take the plastic dog they have and you can hear her telling it to sit. ]]> Julia can now walk https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2011/03/03/julia-can-now-walk Tue, 11 Feb 14 08:49:34 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=1184 ]]>
