Today I want to share a couple short stories from our one-to-one mentoring strategy. One mentee who tried to commit suicide one year ago wrote this to his online mentor: I now know for certain that I am not suicidal at all anymore because of Jesus ... I have to give the main credit to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Another mentee, L* from the UK, was struggling with isolation and broken family relationships. L's mentor from Armenia connected her with a local church which turned out to be the same place L's sister had recently come to faith. As L and her sister reconnected, healing began to take root in their relationship and the distance between them faded. But more than that, L discovered that God could be a Father to her after the pain of losing her earthly father. We see God working in relationships like these on a daily basis! Thank you for continuing to hold up our ministry in prayer.

Dear Friends, One of the churches that support us ask if we can write a monthly update for their prayer newsletter. I thought it would be appropriate to share with you as well, so that you too may be encouraged by hearing what is happening in the ministry. This is our update for July: --- Thank you so much for praying for us over the past months. God is using this ministry to make a significant difference in the lives of people around the world. A team member recently shared this story from the mentoring ministry. Mary*, a young adult student in Georgia, US has been struggling with self-ham since February and has been very suicidal - she actually called emergency for help and felt no one really cared for her. One of our mentors has been walking alongside her and encouraging her to consider surrendering her life to Jesus: This is what she said last week to her mentor: "I have never said the sinner's prayer inviting Jesus as my personal Savior could you lead me?" Please continue to pray for this young woman and the many others who write to us daily looking for help and hope. --- I (James) want to thank you too: our friends, supporters and prayer partners, for your ongoing prayer and support of us in this ministry. God Jams a Gun

Dear Friends and Supporters, I am writing today to share a story about someone whose life was saved in spite of their attempt to end it. Much of this article was originally published and distributed by newsletter from The Life Project. We often have people reach out to us when they are at a point of crisis in their lives. A suicidal woman wrote in after reading our story on issuesiface.com called Sexual Abuse: Hidden Things. She connected with a mentor who had journeyed through the long process of finding healing from sexual abuse. In the course of their correspondence, the mentee wrote:

“I just wanted someone to know and understand how bad it has gotten for me. When I sent the last message to you, I was done and was going to end it. I got my gun out, sat there for quite a while, prayed for forgiveness, and then I stuck it to my head. I attempted to pull the trigger but it wouldn't fire, I couldn't believe it. At that moment, I knew Jesus was present and he had intervened. I called a friend of mine, told her what happened, and she took me to the hospital."

They continued to journey together. Later the woman gave an update:

”Thank you for your continued prayers. I am visiting some friends and working very hard to put my life back together again. It has been a hard road, nothing has been easy, each day seems to be another memory to work through, but I’m doing it day by day. Thanks again for your prayers."

She continued to improve and then wrote that she got a new job that she loves. Then in one of the last messages, she said,

"I want to thank you for being there for me, you are the one who ultimately helped me find my way back to God. I trusted no one but there was something about you that led me to take a chance and reach out for help. I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to see a message from you, words of encouragement, and real concern for me. It meant more than you could ever know. Thank you for your kindness, your time and most of all, your prayers on my behalf."

Thank you for taking the time to read this and to pray for us as we continue in this ministry. There are so many isolated and hurting people who have no one to confide in face to face. Through your partnership, we can continue to reach those whom God puts in our path. Your gift is used to help people around the world to know Jesus.

Dear Friends, My focus the past few months has been to improve our online mentoring software. This allows our mentors to be more effective in communicating with the hurting people who come to us for help. One such person wrote to us very recently in response to the help she had found through our online mentoring after a suicide attempt and painful relationship breakup: "After talking with one of your team members I've managed to carry on and work through this! I am so grateful for your whole team being there! I wish I could personally thank you but all I can say is thank you for saving my life! My life has changed dramatically and all I needed was a push to take control and your team has gave me that! I'm not back with my boyfriend but I'm moving on in life! I can't thank you enough." So, thank YOU for allowing us to continue in this ministry through your prayer and financial support. With the start of the new school year and the end of summer things have begun to pick up around here again. Though it never really gets "slow", things definitely do ramp up in the fall. A New Devotional Series: Our film team has been spending a lot of time this spring and summer working on a story-based discovery series called Treasure: Jesus is Worth Everything. They have been incredibly busy working on this project and are getting closer and closer to the November launch! Suicide Thanks

We got a really encouraging email recently from the mom of a suicidal visitor who was connected with one of our mentors. Names have been changed for privacy.

This is Martha's mom responding. Thank you so much for your support of Martha. You may have been a part of saving her life. I took her to the hospital about a week ago. She was admitted & is still there. She is safe thank God We are supporting her completely with the professional help that she needs right now. Please continue to keep all of our family in your prayers but especially Martha. May God bless you for your very important work. I will let Martha know that I have responded to you on her behalf. I hope that she will contact you herself when she is ready.

Praise the Lord for how he continues to use us each day. Please continue to pray for Martha (not her real name) and the many others we have who come to us in similar situations. Pray for our mentors as well that they would be wise and caring in responding to each of these.

Saved from Suicide

Yesterday, a teenage boy wrote on a blog and said he had tried to commit suicide and didn't know what to do about his problems. After reading our mentor's response to him, he wrote back this morning: "Thanks, sir. After your response, i feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my head. I’ll try to live on, as death will only make me feel guilty afterlife. For being selfish to end my troubles and not thinking about my parents, who raised me this big, only to watch me break their hopes in such a cowardly way." Thank You Lord!!

Suicide and Mentoring

The following exchange took place a few days ago on one of our articles related to suicide. I am posting it here because I thought it was a really meaningful example of our ministry in action combined with the positive influence of mentoring on the site. Vandana Mittal: hi.. I love a guy who says he we cant be together because of commitments to himself and his family. I am not able to move out of his life. I feel like nobody else can take up his place. Once i tried committing suscide. Whenever i ask him whether he loves me he says he dont want to talk about all this stuff. He does not answers me. Whenever i try to move ahead, i become more and more possessive for him and end up with thoughts like committing susicde. I cant stop myself and i feel like the only way by which everybody(my family, He, my frnz) can get rid of me is if i commit suscide. I dont know what to do. Right now m living with my sleeping pills. Chemist said he cant provide me more. Please suggest sumthing.

Barbara: Dear Vansana and Leah, How great that the two of you are working through this situation together. Vandana please except the help from the mentor that will be aiding and encouraging you through this…I hooked up with a great mentor from this site a while back and she made a husge differance in my life…she got me on track again and when all was said and done…i couldn’t wait to report the GREAT NEWS to her. Also, this past week (Wednesday) i was very suicidal again and i reached out to my church via the internet requesting prayer….I knew I was in a bad place with those old familiar thoughts of death…and made it totaly clear to them i was struggling with thoughts of suicide within an hour i received a call from the church and I knew in my heart all was going to be well…my step of faith knowing that God listens to the prayers of others helped me overcome the temptation to check out of life…Sure enough, thursday i went for a job interview and ended up landing the job before i even left….how SATAN tries to lure us into the temptation to end our lives JUST when a break through is about to occur…had i tried to take my life on Wednesday, I wouldn’t had been available for the job interview and more importatnly I wouldn’t have been around to serve at my church office today and let those who cared about my situation “SEE” I was ok and that I made it through that scary, scary night..Hoping the best for you!
