A big THANK YOU to everyone who has been praying for us in our move! We have a new home!

We are SO thankful for this new place. We have been here a week as of Wednesday and so far we love it! Though the journey has been rocky and super stressful at times we're thrilled to be finally through and officially moved in.

Thank you for praying for us! We know there have been many who have prayed diligently as we have walked through this process.

A little about the journey so far...

The picture above is the new place that we bought in the small town of Quesnel, about 6.5 hours drive north of where we used to live in Chilliwack. Since my (James) work is entirely online, I can work from anywhere as long as there is good internet connectivity. We started this process back in March, packing boxes into a storage unit and then listing our house for sale in April. We both felt like this was the direction that God was leading us.

One cool example of this was on the day that we were having pictures taken of our place. I had been praying the days before that it would be sunny for the pictures. I really wanted the place to be presented well and so sunshine coming in the windows would be just perfect. But we woke up on the morning of pictures and it was very grey and POURING rain. Still, I hoped for a miracle, though looking outside wasn't very uplifting to my faith. Even 20 minutes before the photographer was scheduled to arrive it was still grey and raining.

Then, the Lord answered my prayer. When the photographer showed up and started taking pictures the rain stopped, the sky opened up, and sunshine shone through. There are very few times I have seen such obvious and unmistakable answers to my prayers, but this was one of them. I know it might seem trivial in the grand scheme of things, but it was very meaningful to me and it gave me a little glimpse of what might be to come.

So, we listed our place for sale and the real-estate market in Chilliwack promptly crashed.

The crash...

Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration, but not much of one. We've talked to real-estate people who say the market turned almost overnight. We lived in a very nice townhouse complex and we saw another place in the same complex sell very quickly shortly before us. In fact, there was a bidding war and it went for $50k over the asking price within a week. However that place was a real "fixer-upper" so to speak. Realtors might say it had "good bones" and just needed "a little elbow grease". We know it needed a LOT of work.

So, we listed slightly higher, thinking we would have no trouble selling our nice, move-in-ready place. We wanted to sell because we really wanted to get into a larger place, in a quieter area with more room for the kids to roam and play. Not to mention we anticipated that Ben would want to park a car on the driveway soon enough.

But then, after listing with high hopes, nothing happened. No offers. Very few showings. We started to wonder if we picked the wrong agent, but he seemed to be doing what he could. We even ran into a few other agents who said he had mentioned our place to them.

After a month and a half the realtor encouraged us to consider lowering our price. We grudgingly hacked a year's wages off the price tag and waited for the lower offers to flow in. We hoped that we had taken enough off to capture people's interest and maybe still get bids over what we were asking. Yet, still nothing.

After what seemed like years, we finally received a very low offer for our place in July. This was another $35k lower than what we had already lowered our price to. At first we did not want to consider it. It was too low. It was far less even than the dumpy unit that sold in the bidding war down the lane. It was almost an insult!

However, time was moving on, and since we were planning to go further north we really wanted to be moved into a new place before the snow hit. After more thought and prayer we decided to accept their offer. Not having any insight yet into where we might move, we agreed to a possession date for the end of August. That gave us 1.5 months to find a place, make an offer, verify all the particulars and do the move.

The search...

Throughout all of this we had already been looking for new places up in Quesnel. We chose this town because of a combination of factors. We love the climate and terrain. We really wanted to live in a smaller, quieter, more peaceful area. We were constantly running into folks who spoke highly of the town. We could almost afford a proper house here. And two of Carolanne's brothers already lived here. When my sister and brother-in-law decided to move up to Prince George, (1.5 hours north of Quesnel) that clinched the decision.

Having accepted the offer on our place, we searched for homes with even greater vigor. I had multiple realtors sending listings to me, along with several automated systems watching for any new place or development. I scoured hundreds of listings looking for just the right place. We even put offers in on a few of them, though we were usually out-bid by others.

I think the Lord continues to have a sense of humour because in the end, in spite of the automated internet robots alerting me to anything new, and the multiple realtors watching for possible places, and my own constant searching, it ended up being Carolanne who found this place while casually browsing on Facebook marketplace. I'm so glad she did!

We moved in on Aug. 31'st. Now we have begun the long and tedious process of unpacking boxes and figuring out where everything is going to go. There are a few little things around the house that need fixing or repairing (hot water tank, fridge and some painting to name a few) but in general the place has been well kept and we're very happy with where we have landed.

Thanks!!!

Thank you again for praying for us! We really have appreciated all the support that folks have expressed to us and how many people have prayed for us during this move. It's a big deal to move a family that far. The kids had never moved before, and Carolanne has never lived outside the Fraser Valley. Thankfully since we homeschool there is less school exchange stress. We are going to continue with the homeschooling. We're still not sure exactly how prepared we are for the imminent snow. But we know that God continues to be with us and we trust He is guiding our steps.

As mentioned above, I James am continuing to work as a missionary with Power to Change. That part of our lives has not changed. I still serve with the internet based ministry called Digital Strategies (under P2C) and spend most of my day writing computer code used by our ministry and others to present the gospel and mentor people around the world.

We also still have many friends and family members who donate regularly to support us financially in this ministry. We are super thankful for each one who gives so faithfully and generously to help advance this kingdom work. Thank you for your continued gifts and prayer.

Our ministry really depends on these gifts and donations from people who understand the opportunity and impact, and who give generously to support it. If you would like to give to help support this online ministry, click here to go to our secure ministry giving form.

Thanks again on behalf of all of us,

James

We feel very blessed to have you on our team! Thank you for your prayer and support of us in this ministry over the years. We are so glad to have you standing with us in this ministry. Just recently I had the opportunity to connect with a man leading a team in Jordan. They work to help facilitate connections between new believers and churches or individuals in the middle east who can help them take the next steps in their faith. This team is partnering with us to use our mentoring software to make some of these connections and has even volunteered to translate the platform into Arabic. This means we can have Arabic speaking mentors using the software in their own language and connecting with new Arabic speaking believers. In another initiative, one of our staff members with a heart for reaching Liberia has created a special Liberia edition of one of our evangelistic sites. He is in contact with a minister in Liberia who has planted 21 churches, leads a seminary, does some urban ministry on the streets of Monrovia, and is interested in trying our online strategy in his context. We used Facebook advertising to specifically reach people in that country with ads for that site and within 48 hours a $20 investment brought in 17 new people in need of mentoring. In the country of Indonesia a team has been working diligently to create their own translated and adapted version of our evangelistic IssuesIFace strategy called CeritakuCeritamu. They are focused on reaching people in-country using Bahasa Indonesia and connecting them with their own Indonesian speaking mentor. They are also translating the mentoring platform into Bahasa Indonesia in order that Indonesian mentors can use the platform in their own language and respond to people from their own country. You may have heard in previous letters that we were reaching people in the country of India as well. This strategy is continuing and has seen some really great responses and success. We are now working to translate the MyStruggles site into both Punjabi and Hindi in order to reach an even wider segment of the population. We are working with people in-country to provide the best possible resources. These are just a few of the many different strategies and partnerships we are currently working on or have developed. I didn't even mention Iowa, Singapore, Brazil or North Africa. One of our ministry's biggest needs right now is for more mentors. In the words of our Lord, the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. We really do need more mentors (and also staff) who have a heart for ministry and would like to help contribute to the fulfillment of Jesus' great commission. Please pray for more people to join us. If ministering to one of these countries I've mentioned touches your heart, please don't hesitate to connect with me for more details, or sign up to be a mentor at tmm.io. Thank you for listening! Thank you for praying! And thank you to those of you who give financially to help us continue in this ministry. Check out our blog for other updates and more personal family stories.]]>
Ministering In India And Expecting Twins https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2018/03/22/india-and-twins Fri, 23 Mar 18 15:09:32 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=2697 Partnerships In India Our team has been busy the past few months, and one of the biggest developments has been the formation of several partnerships with groups and lay-leaders serving on the ground in India. ?? The nation of India is a huge potential mission-field with a population of 1.3 billion people with only 2.3% claiming Christianity as their religion.* We are in the process of building partnerships with several different groups right now who would like to use our mentoring software to reach and mentor people in their respective areas of India and Bangladesh. ? Please pray for these partnerships, that the Lord would use the folks on the ground, and the tools we provide, to share the love of Christ with many in the nation of India. Pray especially for our director Sheldon as he and a small team will be traveling out there to meet with leaders in-country and finalize some of the details required to allow this ministry to happen. * Source: Wikipedia Donation Matching Update A few months ago I mentioned that there is a special donor who has partnered with The Life Project to financially match any gifts that we are able to raise, up to $100,000. This gift has been a HUGE blessing to our whole team and we have all been working together to take this opportunity to raise funds in order to take advantage of the matching. Essentially it has meant that every additional donation we receive is duplicated with a gift to The Life Project. ? ? I am really excited to tell you that working together as a team we have raised the full $100,000! In fact, the donor making the match has been quite impressed and has pledged an additional $50,000 until the end of June. ? ? As part of this funding drive, Carolanne and I have personally been praying for and trying to raise an additional $250/month in monthly support. Though one-time gifts are VERY helpful, these monthly donations are especially critical to us, since we are still a long way from having our full monthly support. Encouraging Stories What would a newsletter be without "stories from the field"?! ? Since my role on the team is very technical, I went looking for a good story from one of our more "front-line" staff. I found this, which reminded me again why I do this work. This was written by one of our online chat coordinators:
One of the greatest joys so far this quarter is the salvation of an expectant teenager who came into the room in January, fearful that she'd be pushed into an abortion. That first evening, she accepted Christ as her Savior. The next day her boyfriend came to the room and made the decision to follow Christ as well. Soon she reported that she'd been to a pregnancy resource center where she'd joined a Bible study and was getting help. The last I heard, they had gotten married and had found out that she's expecting twins. Both of these young people come from homes where parents do not yet know the Lord, so do join us in prayer for their salvation.
Praise the Lord ? ? for how He continues to work every day through the faithful service of our team using the tools I have the honor of helping to build. Thank you for your part in allowing us to be a part of this ministry. Prayer Requests ? We truly appreciate the great team of friends, supporters and prayer warriors who stand with us in this ministry. We are reminded quite often that we couldn't do this job without you. Please continue to pray for us in the following areas:
 • Sheldon's trip to India (see above)
 • More technical staff We are looking for a few more people to join our technical team. Specifically a front-end designer and a back-end programmer.
Lets Get Together! If you have any questions about our ministry, or would like to hear more, we would love to connect further. If you live somewhere in or around the Fraser Valley, BC, we could easily get together for coffee, pie or a meal. ? Why not drop us a note? Click here to leave us a note on our website form. The Recent Prayer Letter https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2017/12/12/the-recent-prayer-letter Tue, 12 Dec 17 14:53:40 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=2679 Hi there! Most of you should now have received the end of year prayer letter that we recently sent out by mail.** Thank you for taking the time to take a look through it. We hope you like the family picture prayer card that was included. Getting kids to sit still and not make faces for a brief second to get a good picture is surprisingly hard! ? ** If you didn't happen to receive the letter, we would love to send it to you but we probably don't have proper address information. Let us know where to send it using our private contact form and we'll get you one as soon as we can. Thank you for upholding our ministry in prayer. (and for some of you financially as well) We really appreciate having you standing with us in the ministry. In the letter, I mentioned that we currently have a special donor who has pledged to match up to $100,000 of donations given to us or other staff members in the ministry. If you have not yet given toward this, I would like to encourage you again to consider taking advantage of this gift. During this time, any gift you give will have a matching gift given to The Life Project. That is TREMENDOUSLY helpful to us and to the ministry. We have been asked to put a special emphasis on trying to raise an additional $250 in MONTHLY donations. This means people who join our team and commit to give $50/$100/$200 or some other amount every month. If you let us know of your commitment, we can count the whole annual amount toward the matching. So, for example, if you decide to give or increase your gift $50 per month and let us know, we can count $600 toward the matching! Please do not feel pressured by any of this. If you are already giving or have been holding us up in prayer, we really do appreciate it. THANK YOU for sticking with us.

A Changed Life...

I did not want this entire letter to be about fundraising, so I went searching for a cool story of someone who's life is being changed by Jesus. I found John* who wrote in on one of our sites just a few days ago from Nigeria asking "If God is all knowing, did he knows those who will go to hell?, if he knows, then why did he created them?" He was connected with one of our more experienced mentors who replied that "God created each one of us and gave us free will, to either accept Him or reject Him. He is always waiting for each one of us to make that decision." The mentor also invited John to make a personal decision for himself to follow Jesus. Just a couple messages later, John writes "Thank you so much. I just invited Jesus into my life. I love the conclusion part of the prayer which says "make me the person you want me to be Lord"" Thank you for praying for people like John*, for this ministry and for us. Your gifts and your prayers allow us to continue serving here with The Life Project. * names changed for privacy If you would like to give a gift today online, you can do so on the secure giving form on The Life Project's website. It's purpose was to help encourage and inform everyone about our ministry activities and future direction. We also hoped to raise some additional funds for staff and the ongoing ministry expenses. We had great food, and many from this team who attended expressed to me how much they appreciated the chance to see a bit more clearly what we do and the real impact we have. In my opinion, it was a great success. Thank you so much to those of you who were able to make it. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to follow up in any way from that event. I also have a more personal request that I would like to share with you. My laptop is beginning to show it's age and will need to be replaced. Since 99.9% of my work involves my laptop, usually running very heavy loads, I will be needing to get a new one. The machine will be bought for me by Power to Change but I would like to raise some funds to help cover the cost of the purchase. I would be honored and very grateful if you would consider donating funds to help with this purchase. I made the switch to a Mac back in 2013 and have really enjoyed the power and stability it has offered. My current MacBook has been a great tool for application development and I am looking forward to the newer/faster model. Most of the development tools that we use in building the websites and applications are built to run best on a Mac so it has been a very good fit for my development needs. Unfortunately, lately it has begun to have some hardware issues such as freezing and rebooting at random and inconvenient times. Thank you so much for considering this. Please do not feel pressured in any way. We really do appreciate having you on our team, and are so grateful for what you all give in funds and prayer already. Thank you for your time, James W.]]>

It has been incredible how God has used you in my life, particularly in the seasons of deep need. I have seen God be instrumental through you to reveal His hand of healing truth, love, and comfort. I will miss our times of communication, you mean a lot to me. Thank you for always being there to listen and give wisdom and discernment, especially to pray for me. My life has changed for the better for having your support and encouragement. Thank you so much for praying for and supporting us in this ministry. It is amazing to see how God uses my small part in this to touch the lives of people literally around the world. We even receive messages from people in places such as Iraq, Syria, India and China. It's so cool to be able to play a part in that sort of impact. Thank you for allowing us to continue to be a part of this ministry. Thank you for your prayer, and thank you for your financial help. Some Numbers For The Statistically Minded: For the 2015 fiscal year (July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015) we saw the following: Incoming Messages Matched To Mentors: 83,537 Active Mentors: 1065 at fiscal end Chat Room Participants: 122,585 Indicated Decisions for Christ: 13,271 Organization Updates: As you may have heard, for the past while Power to Change has been searching for someone to fill the role of President. Rod Bergen was previously holding the Interim President position during the search, and has now accepted the full role of President of Power to Change. Additionally, Sheldon Kotyk has taken the reins of Director of The Life Project which is the ministry that I serve. Our mission statement is The world is online. We help them know Jesus. Read more about our team here. Support Status Update: As many of you know, my work with Power to Change is funded by monthly financial donations given by people like yourself who stand with me in the work that I do. I am very grateful for this team of donors and prayer supporters who allow me to continue working with the ministry. To date, my support level is around 50% of what it should be based on Power to Change guidelines of my salary and expenses. In light of the deficit, The Life Project has generously contributed a portion of the remainder to cover my ongoing salary. (being a non-profit, this basically means that someone else has had to raise the money on my behalf) The expectation is that I continue to try and raise the remaining amount as monthly donations. Please continue to pray that God will provide for our financial needs. For the past year or so I have also been working a second job (in addition to my full-time at PtC) to help with our family finances. Family Update: As a family, we have been doing very well. Carolanne continues to homeschool the kids and meets regularly with other homeschooling moms and groups in town for field trips and socializing times. We have quite a variety of homeschool related projects that take place around our house such as rock collections and research, hatching baby chicks, math assignments and lots of trips to the library to check out the latest reading materials. The kids are growing fast and have been quite excited about the prospect of going to Disneyland in a few months. We wanted to take them while they were at the right age to enjoy it, so we have been saving as a family for a few years now, and plan to go down later this spring with Grampy and Grammy. We hope to also visit some of our other family members and supporters in San Diego while in the neighborhood. Final Thoughts & Prayer Requests: Thank you again for standing with us in this ministry. Both Carolanne and I are very encouraged to have such faithful friends supporting us in prayer and financially. Please continue to pray about our financial situation. God has been so very faithful in providing for all our needs, and yet it still always seems to be a point of stress in our lives. Maybe He is still teaching us patience and reliance on Himself. Please pray also for our core team. (The Life Project) There has been quite a lot of change lately with financial cut-backs, and people being let go or moving on to other fields, and systems requiring changes, and leadership changes. Please pray for unity in the team and for God's provision for our ministry as a whole. Finally, please pray for our mentors. They truly are the front-line of the ministry, serving the people who come asking for help, and walking with them on the next steps of their spiritual journey. Please pray that they would be encouraged in their relationships. Often the mentors write to visitors and never get a response. Other times the "prayer requests" are so shallow or short that they almost seem to not be worth responding. And yet in some cases, some of our coolest salvation stories have come from short (or even empty) messages we have received from people who turned out to be in some far off country looking for help but unable to express it clearly. Answer: We are very blessed to have both of our families are local to this area so Easter usually involves a dinner on each side, usually with large gatherings of extended family. On Carolanne’s side, an Easter egg hunt usually precedes the dinner, while on James’ side fewer young kids means more adults sitting around the living room swapping stories of busy lives. The websites often change to reflect the season as well, featuring more articles related to the nature of Easter and what the celebration is really all about. There may be a special video featured on the site for the visitors with a message of hope in Christ and forgiveness for those who seek it. The daily devotionals will feature content related to the season as well, with a message of encouragement and a reminder to live in remembrance of the grace we have received. Often, at seasons where tradition involves family gatherings (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving), those who do not have family or loved ones nearby turn to venues like the Internet to find hope and encouragement (or just distraction). This is most clearly seen in our mentoring community. A large portion of our ministry happens behind the scenes in the interactions between the mentors and the visitors and in the times leading up to and following celebrations like these, we see a marked increase in lonely and hurting people coming to us for help. Please pray for our mentors during this time as they may be fielding some very tough questions and situations. Pray also for us as we are continuing to work through some of the bugs related to building and launching thelife.com. Finally, please pray for our support, that God would continue to provide, and bring more people to our support team. • For our financial support. We still have a long way to go. Praise the Lord for those who have recently joined our team.
 • For more volunteers. We need more people to help respond to the many questions and prayer requests we receive from the websites. Visit www.truthmedia.com/mentor for information on how you could help.
 • For the daily new believers that we try to help grow in their new faith.
 • For the protection and guidance of all the staff and volunteers. Many are struggling themselves with various life situations. Sometimes it seems as though working with this ministry results in a large target being placed on your back for Satan to shoot flaming arrows at. Pray that God would give each of us courage and strength for the work, and that He would provide generously for each of our needs.

Recent Updates https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2011/08/24/august-newsletter Wed, 24 Aug 11 10:18:59 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=1349 The encouraging part in that is we have seen a matching rise in people telling us they have accepted Christ or rededicated their lives. In March, we had around 1400 people who indicated they made spiritual decisions. In July, that number was over 2200 people! Praise the Lord that He is using our small efforts for His own glory and is making us effective in sharing the good news of the Gospel. Thank you for your part in allowing us to continue in this ministry. We really couldn't do it without you standing with us. As the traffic grows, so do the responses. We are currently in need of more mentors to minister to and connect with those who are coming to us wanting to talk about both their spiritual and life issues. Several articles have hundreds of comments on them and active conversation are taking place all over the site. You can learn more about becoming a mentor at http://bit.ly/pRQZad Becoming a volunteer with our ministry can be a really rewarding way to get involved. We recently had a visit from a volunteer couple Donald and Nancy, from the New York area. Several years ago, Donald had been searching for a devotional and ended up on the Power to Change site. He got involved, helping to run one of our small groups in chat. He is now leading that group. Donald talked about how much this ministry has meant to him. Here is one of the stories he shared.
One day we had a fellow come to chat who shared that he was heavily involved in drugs and alcohol and needed help. Donald suggested that that everyone in the room pray for him. That prayer soon lead to the new comer realizing that he needed a personal relationship with God. As the members in the room lead this man through the sinner’s prayer Donald began to realize what an impact a Christian online chat can have. “I just love it” he says. Our newcomer is a regular in chat and says he is slowly recovering.
It’s an incredible privilege to hear the stories and see the impact of the time that mentors devote to sharing God’s love in this powerful way. If you would like to participate with us in this way, you can learn more about it by watching the video at: http://bit.ly/pRQZad Thank you again so much for your prayer and support of us in this. We really feel blessed to have so many caring people standing behind us in this. You can read more about what we're doing along with more stories like these on our blog at: http://ministry.jamesandcarolanne.com/ Wishing you all the best this summer/fall season, James and Carolanne Warkentin]]>
August 2011 Newsletter https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/2011/08/02/august-2011-newsletter Tue, 02 Aug 11 11:26:23 +0000 https://ptc.jamesandcarolanne.com/?p=1276 As many of you know I struggled with some health problems over the last few years and have had to undergo repeat surgeries attempting to correct things. I'm happy to say that I'm "cautiously optimistic" about it all. It seems that the most recent surgery has been successful and things are starting to go back to normal. I'm very thankful that the Lord has allowed things to finally heal properly. It's been a long journey and I feel that I've learned a lot about God's grace and will during this time, but I'm also glad that it seems to be over. Thank you very much for your ongoing prayers for us in this. On the ministry side of things, the past few months have been super busy with preparation for our annual conference. Our film team has been hard at work putting together over 1000 video clips of the staff across Canada, along with creating two documentaries. This in addition to their regular video work for the site. One of the documentaries is actually now available on the Power to Change site. The story is only 19 minutes long but it will change the way you see the people around you. We showed it at our staff conference this past week and had incredible feedback.

This video is a great tool that you could use with a small group. We have created discussion questions to engage your group in a conversation about how it is that we know the Gospel, but it so hard to share our faith. We've also had some really cool connections happening in some of our online communities. This excerpt was sent to our team from our director and I thought you would also find it encouraging. - - - excerpt - - - Jess, who has attended one of our online small groups for quite some time, had been causing a fair bit of trouble. She had a fair bit of attitude and had been disrupting her group regularly. More than one leader had considered asking this person to no longer be part of the group. One of our moderators reached out to this visitor and built into her life, sharing the love of Christ even when the lady was responding out of her own pain. Others on our team have regularly prayed for Jess for months. Then one day early this month, Jess was in a conversation in open chat and led one of our newer visitors to the Lord! After sharing for quite some time, she came into the online small group (moderated chat) to share this good news with the ladies present that evening. The ladies rejoiced and prayed for this new life. Would you join us in praying for her growth and that of others who have accepted Christ this month? It’s incredible that every single day, thousands of people come to the site looking for information, conversation and often answers to some of life’s tough situations. Many people are looking for information on tough relational issues. When they find our videos and articles, they often join the community. One of our articles reached over 1,000 comments this past week. As people comment, we have mentors who are responding and coming alongside these people. The goal is to connect current realities to God. In the context of relationship, hearts are open to hearing the message of Jesus. - - - end - - - Thank you for your ongoing prayers for us in reaching these people with the love of Christ. Please continue to pray that God would make us even more effective and show us how best to reach the next generations. Please continue to pray also for our support. It has been really encouraging to see that it has been increasing lately, however we also still have a long way to go. As it stands right now, we have raised approximately 46% of our total need. Thank you again to all of you who have been standing with us so faithfully. We wish you God's blessing this summer in all you do. All the best from James, Carolanne, Benjamin & Julia.]]>
